We’re Here to Help!
Many patients are surprised to learn that OHIP does not cover prescription medications in Ontario. If you don’t have private insurance or workplace benefits, paying for medications can feel overwhelming. At LiveYoung Pharmacy, we’re committed to helping you find affordable options and the right support for your health.
What Are My Options Without Drug Coverage?
1. OHIP+ (Youth Under 25)
If you are 24 years old or younger and do not have private insurance, your prescriptions may be covered under OHIP+, Ontario’s youth drug benefit program. This includes most medications on the provincial drug formulary.
2. Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Program
If you’re 65 years or older, living in a long-term care home, or receiving Ontario Works or ODSP, you may qualify for the ODB program, which covers most common prescriptions.
3.Trillium Drug Program
For patients with high prescription costs compared to household income, Ontario offers the Trillium Drug Program. After a quarterly deductible based on your income, most eligible medications are covered. Our pharmacists can help with enrollment.
4. Student Insurance Plans
Many colleges and universities in Ontario provide student health plans that cover prescription drugs. If you’re a student, bring your student ID and insurance card — we can direct bill your plan at LiveYoung Pharmacy.
5. IFHP (Interim Federal Health Program) for Refugees
Refugees and protected persons may qualify for the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), which covers many prescription medications and essential health services. We are registered to direct bill IFHP so that eligible patients do not have to pay out of pocket.
6. Private Health Insurance
You may purchase an individual or family drug plan, or use benefits provided by your employer. We can bill most insurance providers directly.
7. Pay-as-You-Go (Out of Pocket)
If none of the above applies, you can still save. Our pharmacists will suggest generic alternatives, cost-effective therapy options, and manufacturer savings programs to lower your costs.

Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) & Senior Deductibles
we help Ontario seniors understand their prescription drug coverage through the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Program. If you are 65 years or older, you are automatically eligible for ODB, which reduces the cost of most prescription medications.
High-Income Seniors: Standard ODB Coverage
- Annual deductible: $100 (paid once every program year: August 1 to July 31).
- Prescription co-payment: Up to $6.11 per prescription after the deductible is met. we waive $2 and you pay 4.11
- Coverage: Applies to most medications listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary.
Even if you pay the deductible and co-payment, ODB significantly lowers the cost of medications compared to paying out of pocket.
Low-Income Seniors: Seniors Co-Payment Program (SCP)
If your income is lower, you may qualify for reduced prescription costs through the Seniors Co-Payment Program (SCP).
- No $100 deductible.
- Reduced co-payment: No more than $2 per prescription. we waive to zero
- Income limits to qualify:
- Single senior: Net income of $25,000 or less.
- Senior couple: Combined net income of $41,500 or less.
This program is not automatic—you must apply through the Ontario Ministry of Health. Our pharmacy team can guide you through the application process.
