At LiveYoung Mediclinic, we provide confidential, compassionate, and medically safe care for patients considering ending an early pregnancy. Our physicians follow Health Canada and Ontario Ministry of Health guidelines to ensure your safety at every step.
What Is Early Pregnancy Termination?
Early pregnancy termination (medical abortion) uses medication to end a pregnancy within the first 9 weeks (63 days). The standard treatment in Canada is Mifegymiso® (mifepristone + misoprostol).
This method allows patients to complete the process at home, with the reassurance of medical supervision, follow-up, and 24/7 access to emergency care if needed.
Eligibility for Medical Abortion
You may be eligible if: ✔️ Your pregnancy is ≤ 9 weeks (63 days) from your last period ✔️ You are in general good health ✔️ You can return for a follow-up appointment ✔️ You have access to emergency services if required
You may not be eligible if: ❌ The pregnancy is beyond 9 weeks ❌ You have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus) ❌ You are on long-term steroids or have adrenal failure ❌ You have severe anemia, bleeding disorders, or clotting issues ❌ You are allergic to mifepristone or misoprostol ❌ You currently have an IUD in place that hasn’t been removed

Blood work or ultrasound may be arranged if needed.
Patient Consent
You will be asked to review and sign a consent form confirming you understand the treatment, possible side effects, and follow-up plan.

Our pharmacist provides mandatory counseling, explaining: ✔️ How and when to take each pill (mifepristone first, misoprostol later) ✔️ Expected symptoms and side effects ✔️ Warning signs that require urgent medical care ✔️ Pain management and self-care tips
Written instructions and aftercare resources are provided for home use.

Most patients pass the pregnancy within 4–6 hours of taking misoprostol.
Pain and nausea medications may be prescribed to support comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
🔹 Can I get an abortion without parental consent in Ontario? Yes. In Ontario, you do not need parental or partner consent, regardless of your age.
🔹 How painful is medical abortion? Most people experience cramping and bleeding, similar to a heavy period or miscarriage. Pain relief medications may be prescribed to make the process more comfortable.
🔹 What if I change my mind after taking the first pill? After taking mifepristone, the process cannot be reliably reversed. That’s why we provide thorough counseling before you begin.
🔹 Is it safe? Yes. When used within the recommended timeframe, medical abortion is highly safe and effective. Complications are rare and treatable.
🔹 How long will I bleed? Most bleeding lasts 1–2 weeks, with spotting possibly continuing for several weeks.
🔹 Will it affect my future fertility? No. Medical abortion does not affect your ability to become pregnant in the future. Your fertility returns quickly after the process.
🔹 What should I do after the abortion? Rest, stay hydrated, and take medications as prescribed. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina (tampons, intercourse) for at least 1–2 weeks. A follow-up visit ensures everything is complete.
