Protecting Your Health with Regular Screening
A Pap test (Pap smear) is a simple procedure that checks cells from the cervix—the lower part of the uterus at the top of the vagina. This test helps detect abnormal changes that could lead to cervical cancer if left untreated. With regular screening, these changes can often be found early and treated before cancer develop
Who Should Get a Pap Test?
According to Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) and national guidelines:
• Anyone with a cervix (women, transgender men, and non-binary individuals) who is or has ever been sexually active should start cervical screening at age 25.
• Screening should be repeated every 3 years until age 70, if results remain normal.
• Sexual activity includes any genital skin-to-skin contact, not just intercourse.
• Even if you are no longer sexually active or have only had one partner, regular screening is still recommended.
Why Cervical Screening Matters !
• Most cervical cancers are caused by long-term infection with high-risk types of Human
Papillomavirus (HPV).
• A Pap test can detect abnormal cells before they become cancer.
• Early detection leads to simpler, more effective treatment.
• Cervical cancer is highly preventable through regular screening and HPV vaccination.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
• The test takes only a few minutes in a private, respectful setting.
• A healthcare provider gently collects cells from your cervix using a soft brush or spatula.
• It may feel slightly uncomfortable, but it should not be painful.
• Results are sent to a lab and usually return within 2–4 weeks.
How to Prepare
For the most accurate results:
• Book your test at least 5 days after your period ends.
• Avoid tampons, vaginal medications, douching, or sexual intercourse for 48 hours before your test.
